Field Guides · By Aaron Berth

Milwaukee, for everyone.

World Series, but for everybody. Queer, neurodivergent, a baseball fan, not a baseball fan, loud tonight, quiet tonight: Milwaukee has a corner for you, and I know which one.

I live here, I've sat on a neighborhood board here, and I'll tell you where you fit. Then I'll still meet you for coffee.

Walker's Point

Food, nightlife, and a warm welcome

Walker's Point is the LGBTQ+ friendly part of town, and Woody's is the best LGBTQ-friendly sports bar in it.

Woody's

Brady Street

Still weird, thank God

Pizza Shuttle after the game, then the whole walk is in the Field Guide. I opened a gay night here in 2005 and still sit on its board.

Bronzeville

Black-owned business and culture, on purpose

A hub of Black business and entertainment until highway construction broke it up in the 1960s, and now Black owners and creatives are bringing it back. America's Black Holocaust Museum and The Bronzeville Collective are on the visitor lists.

Riverwest

Creative, scrappy, community-first

Repurposed storefronts and factory spaces hold galleries, bookstores and studios, plus breweries and a famous 24-hour bike ride in late July.

Bay View

Kinnickinnic Avenue, start to finish

Dining, cocktail lounges and quirky shops on one long street, and a movie theater with a ceiling painted like the night sky.

Historic Third Ward

Galleries, shops and river dining

Old warehouses turned into galleries, boutiques and riverfront tables. Dressier than the rest, still easy.

East Side

Lake walks, old movie palaces, a late slice

Lake Park's stone bridges and lighthouse, the stairs down to Bradford Beach, the Oriental Theatre and Landmark Lanes bowling for a rainy night. Pizza Shuttle on Farwell is open late.

Downtown

Walk to the game, eat on Grand Avenue

The hotels are a walk from the ballpark, 3rd Street Market Hall on Grand Avenue is a great stop for a bite, and there's a Kohl's downtown if you forgot your gear.

I'm adding more corners as I vouch for places, in my own words. "Friendly" is as far as I'll go, and I'll flag the ones that fit you.

The quiet things

The ones nobody lists.

Walk the woods at golden hour, then bounce somewhere glowing for dinner. Wehr Nature Center is on my wishlist, and it's been there for a decade. Nobody has ever taken me. Take me.

Check the park's own page for hours and the fall Halloween trail dates before you plan around them.

A little teaseA little tease 18 and up. Tap if you dare.
Quick question before the spicy part. You're 18 or older, right? (wink) MDNI: minors do not interact. Love you, mean it.

All of me, including the good parts.

Didn't find it here?

Just ask.

Sometimes you have to be okay with the Furnace saying no. He's not for everyone. Is he for you?
